3rd Grade Yellow Pages
***Please
note: Information in this packet is subject to change.***
Absences: When your child is absent, please call the front office to inform them (586.446.9170). If you would like to pick up your child’s missed work for that day, please let the office know when you call, so that we’ll have time to gather everything. We prefer that you pick up the missed work after school, since the work will have already been passed out and will be on your child’s desk.
Absent Work: When a student is absent, it is expected that all of the missed class work and homework will be made up, unless you make other arrangements with us. We are fairly flexible when it comes to making up work missed while sick. One important rule of thumb is to always give priority to the current class work and homework before working on the make-up assignments (unless we indicate otherwise). Please don’t feel that you need to keep your child working for hours to finish all of the missed assignments. Generally, we expect the missed work to be turned in, in the number of days absent. (For example, if your child is absent for 3 days, than the missed work will be due 3 days after returning to school.) If your child is absent for an extended amount of time, please have your child turn in the make up work bit-by-bit, as it is finished, rather than waiting until it is all done.
If you know in advance that your child will be absent for an extended time (if you’re going out of town, for example), please let us know at least a week ahead of time if you would like to get the work in advance. We will gather whatever we can, but sometimes there are last minute additions and deletions, so your child may still have a few things to make up when he or she returns. We will allow a few days upon returning to complete any additional work. For the benefit of your child, please try to schedule all vacations during school breaks. This is so your child won’t miss any instruction.
After School Clubs: After school clubs begin in late October. More information will be sent home at that time.
Allergies: Please notify us of any allergies your child has as soon as possible.
Arrival: Students should arrive between 8:00 and 8:15 a.m. Students should not arrive prior to 8:00 (unless they are in Before Care) since school supervision by the staff is not available. If your child arrives after 8:15 a.m., you are responsible for signing them in at the office.
Behavior: Students at Huron Academy will be expected to adhere to the Husky Habits. The Husky Habits are to be respectful, be responsible, be safe, and be excellent. Consequences for not following the Husky Habits may include a student-teacher conference, phone call or letter home, loss of privileges, or detention. Behaviors that warrant an immediate visit to the office include fighting, cursing, defiant behavior, destruction or defacing of school property, use of prohibited electronic devices during school, inappropriate sexual conduct, or theft. These situations will be handled by Mr. Talbot or Mrs. Bremerkamp.
Birthday Celebrations: One of the milestones each year for your child is celebrating their birthday. Our school recognizes that some families have become accustomed to sending in treats for birthdays. At Huron Academy, we will be happy to honor your child’s special day if you wish. However, we have decided to follow the lead of the Healthy Hunger Free Act of 2010, and we have become much more conscious of our students’ dietary and allergy restrictions. In addition, we’ve found that celebrating birthdays with food during the school day, takes away precious learning time. This year we will begin “non-food” birthday celebrations. Below is a list of suggestions for you that might help in this area. We appreciate your support and understanding as we continue to reflect on how to provide all students with a safe and healthy environment. Please speak with your child’s teacher or an administrator if you have any questions or ideas.
· Donate a book to your child’s classroom
· Purchase a board game or card game for the classroom for indoor recess
· Donate a football, soccer ball or other game ball for outdoor recess
· Send in a plant for the classroom
· Stickers
· Pencils
· Erasers
· Bookmarks
· Crayons
· Donate an educational or entertainment video for the classroom
· Jump ropes for outdoor recess
· Music CD
· Educational CD
· Send in a new t-shirt with a permanent marker and ask the teacher to have the students sign the shirt
· Homemade play dough
· Puzzles
· Pencil sharpeners
· Silly straws
***Please note: If you choose to send in a food item to celebrate your child’s birthday, it will have to be sent back home with your child at the end of the day.***
Classroom Library: Students will be able to borrow books from our classroom libraries. If they would like to take the book home to read, they must check it out with us. If the book is lost or damaged, the student is responsible for replacing it. Please make sure that your child takes good care of our books. When the student brings the book back to school, it is their responsibility to check it in with us so that we know they have returned it.
Daily Homework: Homework is due first thing in the morning. If it is not turned in by 8:15am it will be considered late (students who are late to school may turn it in as soon as they arrive). Part of our goal at Huron Academy is to teach children to become responsible members of our community. One way that we do this is by making students accountable for their own homework. For that reason, we don’t accept excuses such as “My mom forgot to put my homework in my backpack.” We also discourage parents from returning to school with their child’s homework if they discover that it was left at home. If you choose to do so anyway, that’s fine, but please understand that out of fairness to all students, the assignment will be considered late.
Third grade students can expect 30-50 minutes of homework, four evenings per week. This is only a general guideline and it does not mean that students will have that amount of homework every evening. Students who are struggling or who become distracted at home may take longer than the average.
Occasionally a student may not finish an assignment in class and may need to take it home. If your child is consistently taking more than an hour to complete homework or is frequently bringing home large amounts of unfinished class work, please let us know so that we can look into the matter.
Detention: Detention is Monday through Thursday from 3:30-4:00. Students must be picked up at 4:00 or they will be taken to aftercare.
Dismissal
Half Day – 11:30 am
Full Day – 3:15 pm

Enrichment/Special Schedule
Monday 9:10-9:55 Music
Tuesday 9:30-10:30 Computers
Wednesday 9:10-9:55 Art
Thursday 9:10-9:55 Gym
Friday 9:10-9:55 Latin
**Gym Shoes – On Thursdays, students may wear gym shoes to school and bring their regular school shoes to change into after gym. Students may not wear their gym shoes for the entire day. Students may choose to keep their gym shoes at school and change into them before gym, but because space is limited, we suggest that you only send gym shoes on gym days (or keep them in the backpacks).
Field Trips: We will be taking field trips throughout the year. Permission slips will be sent home well in advance, with all the pricing information. Permission slips cannot be accepted late. If your child does not participate in a field trip, they will be placed with another class for the day.
Grades: All work will be graded. Class work is worth 30% of the final grade. Homework is worth 20% of the final grade. Tests and projects are worth 50% of the final grade.
Homework Contract: Please sign and return the Homework Contract by Tuesday, September 9th. If you have any questions about the contract, please call, email, or set up an appointment to talk with us.
Hot Lunch Orders: Hot lunch order forms will be sent home on Thursdays. These order forms are due Monday morning. If they are not received by Monday morning, your child will have to bring lunch from home the following week. Cash only please. Checks will not be accepted.
Once a month, an order form for the entire month will be sent home. If you choose to order for the entire month, you will not need to return the weekly hot lunch order forms.
*Please note that monthly hot lunch order forms must be turned in by the due date (which will be on the order form). If it is not received by the date indicated, you will need to fill out weekly order forms instead.
Jean Day: The first Friday of each month is Jean Day. This is a PTC fundraiser and a one time only fee (it will be determined at the beginning of the year) will be necessary to participate. As a class, we will sometimes have extra jean days throughout the year. If this occurs, we will always send a note home informing you of the day your child will be able to wear jeans.
Late Work: We remind students each morning about the items that should have been turned in. Homework is also written daily in their planners. Students who do not turn in an assignment on time will lose 10% the first day it is late. An assignment that is two days late will result in a loss of 20%. After two days, the assignment will not be accepted and will receive a grade of “zero.”
Each time a student does not turn in an assignment, a form will be sent home to help communicate with you, as well as a copy of the missing assignment. This homework sheet will then need to be sent back to school with your signature. If late homework becomes a continual problem, a conference may be required. Please remember, frequent late work will have a negative effect on your child’s overall grades.
Medication: We are unable to administer any medication. Parents must take all medication, including cough drops, to the office.
Monday Envelopes: Each Monday we will send home a white envelope, which we call the Monday envelope. In the Monday envelope, you will find important memos and notes from the administration and the PTC. It is very important that you review all newsletters and memos in your child’s Monday envelope, so that you are aware of important happenings or changes to the schedule.
You will also find your child’s graded homework from the previous week. Please make sure to review all graded papers with your child.
Please return on Tuesday.
Parent Meetings: Please call, send a note, or email your child’s teacher to set up an appointment. Please be aware that if you call to speak to us during the day, the office will most likely put you to our voicemail. We will call you back as soon as possible.
Parent Portal: Parent Portal is a website that will allow you to access your child’s grades and attendance information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will also be able to see if assignments are late. Information about Parent Portal will be sent home in the Monday envelopes on September 15th. This information will include directions on how to set up your account for viewing your child’s information. Please keep in mind that grading assignments does take time, and is often done by teachers after school hours. You should allow approximately 7 days for grades to be updated. Projects and writing assignments may take longer to grade, but we will be sure to get them entered as soon as possible.
Parties: Notes will be sent home requesting donations and volunteers (if needed). These notes will be sent home several weeks in advance. There will also be a sign up sheet located outside of the classroom. We appreciate your help with these events.
Pick-up: Third grade students are dismissed at 3:15. Students will only be released to those persons indicated by you on the emergency form. (Identification must be shown-please let relatives/friends know). If the name is not on the emergency form, we will not be able to release your child to that person! Students may be allowed to leave on their own at 3:15 if we have a release form signed by the parent. (Please ask the office if you need a release form.) Students going to aftercare or an after-school club will stay in the room until 3:30 when we will walk them down to aftercare or they are dismissed to their clubs.
Planner: Every day your child will be bringing home their planner. It is their responsibility to fill in their planner every day. If an assignment has been completed in class, your child should have checked the “finished” box. If an assignment needs to be completed at home, your child should have circled or highlighted the assignment. We do remind students at the end of the day to check their planners. In their planner, there will be a section for you to initial that you viewed/checked over their homework.
Recess: Students will go outside for recess, weather permitting. Please try and watch the news in the morning and send appropriate clothing for inclement weather with your child each day.
School Wide Procedures: We will review these procedures with the students, but we would greatly appreciate it if you could go over them with your child at home as well. These procedures have been put in place to ensure the comfort and safety of all of our students. The procedures will also be posted around the school as friendly reminders of expected behavior.
¨ Enter the restroom quietly.
¨ Use the restroom.
¨ Flush the toilet.
¨ Wash hands with soap and water.
¨ Dry hands.
¨ Throw away all trash in the garbage can.
¨ Exit and quietly return to your classroom.
¨ Stay on the right side of the hallway.
¨ Enjoy other students’ work with your eyes only.
¨ Hold books, supplies, playground equipment, etc. in your hands.
¨ Go directly to your destination.
Snow Days: Huron Academy will be listed on the news if we are closing due to a snow emergency. If there is a building problem, you will receive a call from the school.
Testing: To better assess each student’s individual growth, Huron Academy will formally evaluate students two times this year using the NWEA testing platform. The initial test will be taken the first week of school and the second test will be taken in the spring. Students in grades 3-6 will also be assessed at the state level using the M-Step assessment tool. This assessment will be taken over a two month window in the spring. These data driven scores will provide more timely results to be used for curriculum adjustments.General rules for helping your child prepare for any type of test are to make sure they are getting a good night’s sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and being to school on time. It is also important to encourage your child to do his/her very best.
Textbooks: Students are responsible for the textbooks that are assigned to them at the beginning of the year. Excessive wear and tear, water/liquid/food damage, torn pages, and writing in the book will either result in fines or total replacement of the book. In most cases, fines are assessed at the end of the year.
Water Bottles: If desired, the students may keep water bottles at their desks. In order to minimize spills, only the type with a pull up top (as opposed to a screw-on cap) will be allowed. All students are permitted to use the water fountains during snack, lunch, and bathroom breaks, but during class time students are discouraged from leaving the room and encouraged to bring a water bottle. Students are reminded that this is a privilege, which can be taken away from any individual student if they are continuously playing with their water bottle (which is distracting to everyone around them).
Absences: When your child is absent, please call the front office to inform them (586.446.9170). If you would like to pick up your child’s missed work for that day, please let the office know when you call, so that we’ll have time to gather everything.
